We had moved to Washburn, TN in May of 2011 with the intention of enjoying a scenic view & sharing the homestead with my aging mother, who also relocated to TN to join us. Starting a farm/ranch was only a passing conversation. We were transplants from suburban life (except Allen, who grew up with livestock farming until his early teens) and it surely sounded about as appealing as... well we won't discuss that.
We were approached with an idea in September of 2013. For three months, Allen was busy with research and determined to be different in how he wanted to approach the idea of having cattle. By February 1, 2014, we had our original fences up and our corral built and our very first small herd of longhorns arrived on the scene. By May of 2014, we had begun processing longhorns for beef almost weekly. We were completely caught off guard for the demand for grass-fed beef!
It has been quite the romance/drama/horror event of our lives. Little did we know the tedious, constant trials and rewarding triumphs that were coming! With a mostly suburbanite background (Kimberly), I was completely overwhelmed. I tell folks regularly, we hit the ground running without boots! We have met a multitude of folks through our journey; most of them served a season, some very good (and not so good) reasons, and we are so very fortunate to be connected with a few solid folks who have stuck it out with us from the very beginning.
Running our "operation" requires 24 hours a day, a lot of sacrifice and a whole lot more humility. This is why we use Psalm 50:10 "For every beast of the forest is mine and the cattle on a thousand hills". At the end of every day, no matter how much we think we had control, we are reminded Who really holds the reigns.
It's also important to note that we are self-funded, with no financial support from local, state or federal agencies. While this delays the return on our "investment", it's worth it to us to give us more freedom and flexibility without accountability to anyone but you the consumer. We are so very grateful for your continued support of our Ranch, without you we simply cannot do what we do and because of you we do what we do!
