It's important to me that one understand the foundation of 4CR and how it came to be. When Allen and I got together (he is originally from PA and I from OH), he came to be with my children and I and my mother in OH. He left his home in rural PA, a farm-raised country boy, and settled in with us suburbanites. Settled isn't quite the best word, as it took him MONTHS to get used to flat land and city lights! Needless to say, after 2 years he was ready to return to PA with us in tow. I convinced him to check out East TN (I had been through here many times for work) and we hit the top of Clinch Mountain, in Grainger Co, scenic overlook at sunset one evening in late May 2010. He was sold! Mountains, lakes and country life!!
We moved with my (our) two boys, Sean and Joey, to a very secluded 2 bedroom trailer house literally on the side of a mountain. I'm a flat-lander. Was. So that first winter learning to navigate up and down what I swear was a 90 degree angle driveway was quite the adventure. I loved not having neighbors, though we did get a little stir crazy when it snowed.
After several months, my mother called up one day. The day I knew was coming. You see I'd lived with her for many years, especially after my father passed, and up til then she'd be crying when we got off the phone. This time, she was ready to leave OH. You have to understand, she was hell-bent on staying in OH. She was 82 and just NOT going to move with us! She was going to die in that house that she and dad had shared for over 4 decades. Was.
Needless to say, Mother called on a Wed morning. She just came right out with "this living alone thing sucks...can I come and live with you in TN?" After a few giggles and tears, I told her we weren't all going to fit in our little 2 bedroom trailer house on the side of a mountain. What would she like me to do? During the course of that conversation, it boiled down to this: "Find me a house on a hill with a wrap-around porch. Oh, and porch swings!" Do you believe in Divine Intervention? If not, you will now, as we found that very house the following evening (Thurs) on a FORECLOSURE WEBSITE! We visited that house the following day, Fri and by Mon, it was ours! Literally just that quick!
